Azores Islands

The Azores are a paradise for nature lovers, and it’s one of Europe’s best kept secret paradises.

The Azores is an archipelago of nine volcanic islands situated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and its stunningly vibrant greenery contrasts with the clear blue of the sky, making it a must-see for your next holiday destination. So, what can you find when you visit these islands?

Waterfalls

There are countless numbers of waterfalls on the Azorean islands and, although you might have to hike to reach some of them, the view will be worth it. But, if you’re not a fan of hiking, there are many nearby waterfalls closer to the road. One waterfall to visit is the Caldeira Velha, on the island of Sao Miguel, one of the most famous in the Azores. It is located on the north slope of the Fogo Volcano and you can swim in the warmth of the water too.

Hot Springs

Whilst in the Azores, appreciating the surreal experience of bathing in the hot springs is a must as well. Palms, ferns, and conifers of the subtropical Atlantic forest surround the pools, so you can relax in the beauty of your surroundings. The most famous hot spring is the Terra Nostra, another on the Sao Miguel island; the water is 36oC and is popular amongst many holidaymakers, including the Portuguese.

Sete Cidades Lake

The Sete Cidades lake was named as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal. The lake is situated in an ancient, dormant volcano, and you can walk all around the lake and the top of the volcano. In doing this, you can see where the lava has affected the earth, as it looks like there are two lakes, but it’s all one which is divided by a bridge.

The Activities

Whilst visiting any of the islands, Azores offers a variety of activities that all holidaymakers can enjoy surrounded by natural beauty. These include mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, bird watching, canyoning, hiking, horse riding, hang gliding, scuba diving, and surfing.

The Wildlife

The Azores has a large array of wildlife for you to see and enjoy, including many unique birds, lizards, and frogs. In the sea, you have the opportunity to spot whales and dolphins, as the Azorean Archipelago is one of the best areas to spot these animals. At least a third of all whales, dolphins and porpoises in the world can be found here.

The Beautiful Coast

Another reason the Azores should be on your bucket list is the beautiful coastlines. One of the best ways to see this spectacular view is ailing around the islands – if you have the chance to do it, don’t miss it! The coasts of Azores are known for their crystal-clear waters, the dark cliffs are decorated with different greenery, and waterfalls debouch into the ocean. The coastlines also boast huge rock formations formed by lava.
